CORE COMPONENTS CREDITS

Intellectual Community (I) 1-3 Provides the skills and philosophy necessary for success as a student and as a life-long learner. Academic, content-based courses are individually tailored to each discipline. May be taken for 1-3 Credit Hours
Writing 1 (WA) 3 College Composition and Rhetoric must be completed with grade of C or better.
Oral Communication (O) 3  
Quantitative Reasoning 1 (QA) 3 All students must fulfill the QA requirement, either by placing into a QB
course or through successfully completing a QA course.
Quantitative Reasoning 2 (QB) 3 Students are required to satisfy both QA and QB requirements. All QB courses have a QA prerequisite.
Science (S, SB, SP, SE) 4-8 Complete any two approved courses from the three categories: biological (SB), physical (SP) and earth sciences (SE). One of these courses must have a laboratory component. OR complete one approved integrated science course (S), which must have a laboratory component.
Cultural Context (C, CH, CS, CA) 9 Complete nine approved credit hours, three from each of the three categories: humanities (CH), social and behavioral sciences (CS), and the fine arts (CA). OR complete three hours of approved integrated cultural context coursework (C) plus three approved credit hours from two of the three categories (CH, CS and CA). Students who complete six hours of C
coursework may fulfill the cultural context requirement by completing one of the remaining three categories. Students who complete nine hours of C coursework have fulfilled the cultural context requirement.
US and Wyoming Constitutions (V) 3 Approved V courses fulfill both US and Wyoming Constitutions requirements.
Physical Activity and Health (P) 1  

EMBEDDABLE COMPONENTS

Embeddable components may be taught as part of another course. This
does not preclude those components being taught in courses dedicated
solely to that topic. Embeddable components will ordinarily be fulfilled in
the context of three credit courses.

Family and Consumer Sciences Core Requirements

A core curriculum is required of all family and consumer science majors. This requirement is based on a common body of knowledge in family and consumer sciences which contains concepts relevant to all professional preparation curricula (options).

Textiles and Merchandising Program

The objectives of the textiles and merchandising option is to prepare professionals for careers in

textiles, apparel, design, merchandising, and home-based small business ownership. Unlike most

urban-oriented fashion merchandising or interior design curricula, this option emphasizes

preparation for management or ownership of small apparel stores and other home-related

businesses in Wyoming and rural areas of the west.

Interior Design Minor

A minor in Interior Design is sponsored jointly by the Department of Family & Consumer Sciences and Civil & Architectural Engineering.  It is designed to enable students with career interests in this field to gain experience in the competency areas expected of interior designers.  Students who hope to use this minor to prepare for professional certification examination following graduation should consult the sponsoring departments to receive an advisor for the minor.

Apparel Design Minor

 

A minor in apparel design is sponsored jointly by the departments of Family and Consumer Sciences and Art. It is designed to enable students with career interests in this field to gain experience in the competency areas expected of apparel designers. This minor blends functional, artistic, and fashion considerations in the design of body coverings. Students interested in this minor should consult the sponsoring departments to receive and adviser for the minor.
