All sewing project will be graded on the following:

  1. All samples and projects must be appropriately labeled
  2. Correct and/or appropriate techniques used throughout
  3. Neatness and cleanliness of the project and techniques
  4. Correct pressing techniques used throughout (project must be pressed before grading)
  5. Appropriate choice of fabric or material for project style (it is not recommended that students select a knit fabric except perhaps for Sewing Project 3, after permission of the instructor)
  6. Garment fit, when appropriate
  7. Appropriateness of style for student.  At least one garment must be made for the student.  It is acceptable to construct a garment for a family member or a friend if desired.
  8. Some consideration will be given for difficulty level of each project

Explanation of Sewing Projects

Sample Portfolio - The sample portfolio is a collection of samples designed to enable the student to learn a variety of basic sewing skills and techniques necessary for the construction of a garment.
Sewing Project 1 - Your first sewing project must be a pair of pants, shorts or a skirt with a waistband amd a zipper.   It must not contain a pull-on elasticized waistline.  These are your only restrictions.  You are advised to select a pattern suitable for the level of your sewing skills - there are many patterns included in the pattern catalogs that are rated as eary for beginners - you would be wise to select one of these.
Sewing Project 2 - Your second sewing project must be a shirt, or blouse or a simple jacket with a collar, sleeve (short or long, with or without cuffs), and buttons and buttonholes.   These are your only restrictions.  Again, you are advised to select a pattern suitable for the level of your sewing skills, as for project 1.
Sewing Project 3 - Any sewing project which incorporates sewing techniques.  Be sure to select something within your capabilities.  Students may choose to make a craft project, such as Christmas decorations, a tree skirt etc. or gifts.   Be sure to discuss your ideas with your instructor before purchasing a pattern.  It is wise to select a project which incorporates techniques not yet used for project 1 and/or 2 to gain the most benefit from the experience and the opportunity to advance your skills.
