The Coat Couture Collection: Art to Wear

Fabric Painting and Marbeling

Fabric Painting and Marbeling is a fun way to liven up fabric. Fabric painting involves brushing the material with paint or dye. Dyes move across the fabric blending colors and creating a beautiful, original fabric. Fabric marbeling involves floating dye on the surface of a gel-like medium. The dye is then pulled across the surface, creating an interesting pattern in the gel. Fabric is then laid on top of the surface, absorbing the dye, leaving the pattern behind on the fabric. These techniques take fabric from the ordinary to the extra-ordinary.

Springtime

"The inspiration for my jacket came from the bright colors of flowers blooming in the spring. I love bright colors and chose to use them in my jacket. There are various types of media used to create this jacket, just like numerous varieties and colors of flowers are used in a garden. I used twin needle stitching and couching to add detail to the brightly colored background. My jacket is spring all year round."

Heavenly Calm

"I found a lovely piece of hand-dyed rayon that I thought would be wonderful for my jacket. I decided to paint some silk for the lining. Once I saw how the silk turned out, I decided to use it for the outside of my jacket! As I worked with the silk, the colors reminded me of the beaches of Hawaii. Some of my favorite memories of the years I lived in Hawaii are related to the beach. As a result of the salt-soak process I used on the silk prior to painting it, it ended up with a sand-washed effect. The twisted ribbon tucks on the back of the jacket are symbols of the beautiful flowers of Hawaii. The quilted scraps on the pockets represent the fish and seaweed seen while snorkeling at Hanama Bay. And the wet and wrinkled effect on the jacket front....well, after a day at the beach, what do you expect?"

"Native American bear fetishes are thought to be a symbol of strength. Character strength is something I see in myself and is part of the reason I am attracted to this motif. I have recently begun a collection of bear fetish jewelry and decided to carry my love of bear jewelry to my jacket. The pieced colors are intended to represent inlaid stones often found in jewelry designs."

In Mackintosh’s Garden

"The work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, artist, architect, interior designer, and one of the creators of the Glasgow Style of the Arts and Crafts Movement, stimulated the design for this jacket. Natural designs are the essence of the movement, typifying its close relationship to nature. The motifs of the stylized flowers have been borrowed from his textile, wallpaper, and stained glass works. I have always been interested in Celtic culture, and I can also see how it influenced Mackintosh. I also tried to show the influence of early Celtic art, reflecting Celtic knotwork in the braid design on the front; dragons and a griffon lurk in the lining of the jacket."

A Winter Afternoon

"The muted blues and off-whites in my jacket remind me of the colors of a winter afternoon when the sky is light blue and there is snow on the ground. The cranberry color livens up my jacket in the same way green trees break up the blue and white of a winter afternoon. I chose the colors to be in my jacket because I like to wear colors that are muted earth tones. I chose the style of the jacket because I like casual clothing and I wanted a jacket that I would wear."
