TEXTILES AND MERCHANDISING

Textiles and merchandising is a diverse and competitive field in which individuals plan, provide, and promote apparel, furnishings and related goods desired by the consumer.  A specialization in merchandising offers knowledge of business principles within the fashion and interior industries; entry into the world or retailing, manufacturing, and design; involvement in marketing apparel and residential and commercial furnishings; and study and observation in all facets of fashion and interior organizations.  The textiles and merchandising program also offer a minor in Interior Design, as well as a minor in Apparel Design.

UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING PROGRAM

The textiles and merchandising program is an interdisciplinary curriculum providing a flexible, broad program to accommodate a variety of careers and interests.  Special emphasis is placed on preparation for management or ownership of small retail businesses in Wyoming and rural areas of the West.

Course work includes studies in marketing, management, computers, and advertising.  Courses in art, fashion, textiles, apparel design, interiors, and consumer studies are also required.  In addition to theoretical study, practical on-the-job study is encouraged with opportunities for internships and field experiences.  Study tours to major markets are offered on a regular basis.

The student in textiles and merchandising has access to modern laboratories for textile testing, fashion and interior design, and apparel construction.

Textiles, apparel and design professionals are vitally needed.  The national job market is excellent and many graduates of this program have been placed in a number of top retail firms.

INTERIOR DESIGN MINOR

A minor in Interior Design is sponsored jointly by the departments of Family & Consumer Sciences and Civil & Architectural Engineering.  It is designed to enable students with career interests in this field to gain some experience in the competency areas expected of interior designers.   Students who hope to use this minor to prepare for professional certification following graduation should consult the sponsoring departments to receive an advisor for the minor.

APPAREL DESIGN MINOR

A minor in apparel design is sponsored jointly by the departments of Family and Consumer Sciences and Art.  It is designed to enable students with career interests in this field to gain experience in the competency areas expected of apparel designers.  The minor blends the functional, artistic, and fashion considerations in the design of body coverings.  Students interested in this minor should consult the sponsoring departments to receive an advisor for the minor.
