Sports and Culture

Though many of us devote vast amounts of time and energy to the sports we play, the teams we support, and the games we love, rarely do we consider the broader contexts of the sporting world. Through frequent reading assignments, and class discussion we will look into the ways in which our sporting culture overlaps with our culture at-large, and how each influences and reflects the other. Our goal will be to engage with the sports world in ways we may not have before—going beyond what happens on the field to examine sports as it relates to things like race, gender, religion, or economics. For one segment of the course we will pay special attention to the life and career of Muhammad Ali.

Department:
English

Office Hours/Location:
312 Hoyt Hall

Research Interests:
I'm currently working on a writing a novel, set in 1984 in Detroit as the Detroit Tigers are winning the World Series, and the Tigers' fans are rioting in the streets.

I also like to assert that the sporting world is academically relevant, and in fact is an important area of study.

Favorite...

Books: The Brothers K, by David James Duncan; Pastoralia, by George Saunders; and Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides.
Music: Ryan Adams, Johnny Cash, Sufjan Stevens, Kanye West (but not this new stuff he's doing), Wilco, Motown

Interests and hobbies:

I love baseball in all forms, and enjoy basketball as well. My fanaticism for the Detroit Tigers is borderline embarrassing. I'm also interested in reading, writing, and politics.

Educational Background:
B.A. in Writing from Grand Valley State University; Working towards an MFA in fiction writing here at UW.
