THE UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING
GENERAL STATEMENT OF CAPABILITIES AND MISSION
The University of Wyoming was established in Laramie in 1886 as one of the
Nation's land grant institutions and remains the only four-year degree granting
educational institution in the State of Wyoming. UW's more than 2,000 full-time
faculty and staff are dedicated to providing quality instruction to students,
conducting valuable programs of research, and serving Wyoming through education
and cultural programs.
The University of Wyoming is governed by a bipartisan board of twelve trustees
appointed by the governor with the consent of the Wyoming Senate. UW offers
programs of study within seven accredited colleges: Agriculture, Arts and
Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, and Law. Some
degree programs are also offered through the UW/Casper College Center.
Enrollment at UW averages 12,000, including off-campus enrollment.
UW received more than $65 million in grants and contracts for the 2005 fiscal
year. These funds support programs in instruction, service, and
basic and applied research programs conducted throughout the state, the nation,
and many international sites. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of
Teaching has selected UW for its highest research classification:
Doctoral/Research Universities-Extensive.
The Laramie campus spreads over 785 acres and includes 82 major buildings housing instructional, research, and service facilities. The University Library system includes 7 separate libraries including the William Robertson Coe Library which has cataloged collections which total over 1.3 million volumes and 13,000 active periodical and serial titles. Other resources include the American Heritage Center and 9 other museums and collections. More than 20 research centers and institutes are housed on campus with several others located throughout the state.
