Lunch With LeaRN: Brown Bag Discussions
A Focus on Freshman Teaching and Learning
Every year, LeaRN hosts several brown bag discussions focused on issues of transition and academic success for incoming college students. This year, LeaRN’s brown bag discussions will center on issues relevant to first and second year courses. Before each brown bag, LeaRN will distribute LeaRNing Notes, a summary of some of the books and articles discussing “best practices” for each topic. These compilations of advice and reflections will offer a starting point for the discussion, and they will be sent to all instructors regardless of their participation in the lunches.

To contact LeaRN about any of the topics under consideration—or to suggest topics for future discussion, please email learn@uwyo.edu.

All brown bags are held in Coe 218

Tuesday, March 23rd: Teaching With StrengthsQuest
With the beginning of the Summit Transition Program for incoming students at UW in 2009, students now take the StrengthsQuest tool on-line during June Orientation. Sponsored by the Gallup Intellectual Best Practices Program, StrengthsQuest is a resource to help students understand their own dominant strengths and, equally important, their best practices in meeting college and life goals. This session will overview trends in student strengths at UW as well as introduce classroom approaches to using StrengthsQuest results (directly or indirectly) to help students develop effective goals and habits for college success. All participants will receive a free code to take the StrengthsQuest tool on-line.

Tuesday, April 20th: Integrating College-Ready Skills: Making the Most of Intellectual Community Courses
In 2009, five instructors from a variety of disciplines participated in a LeaRN grant project to integrate core college skills including critical reading, schoolwork management, and scientific writing within their Intellectual Community (I) courses. In this session, grant participants will overview the strategies they employed to combine college-ready skills with core content, as well as tips for helping students better understand the purpose and structure of the USP Program.
