At
the University of Wyoming, your education will prepare you to choose a career
from a wide range of choices, to lead a successful personal life, and to make a
positive contribution as a citizen in a complex multicultural society. To help
you achieve these goals, the University provides an exceptional opportunity for
learning through the University Studies Program. This program establishes a set
of common general education requirements for all students. As a new University
of Wyoming student, you’ll be a partner in this exciting program and will
benefit from its far-reaching goals.
Physical Activity and Health (P)
One of the areas in the University Studies Program is Physical Activity and
Health (P). Students can enroll in PEAC 1001, Physical Activity and Your Health,
to meet the P requirement. This one-credit hour course will provide a balance of
physical activity and an introduction to wellness concepts. You’ll gain an
understanding of the impact physical activity and physical inactivity has on
your health, and you’ll gain the knowledge and experience that will enable you
to make informed decisions about your health as it relates to quality of life
and longevity.
PEAC 1001, Physical Activity and Your Health
OUTCOMES OF PEAC 1001: Students will :.
1. demonstrate the ability to differentiate physical activity from exercise;
2. demonstrate knowledge of the components of health-related fitness;
3. demonstrate competency in developing a personal health-related fitness
program;
4. demonstrate knowledge of nutrition, cardiovascular health, diseases related
to physical activity, stress management, substance use and abuse, and sexually
transmitted diseases;
5. demonstrate knowledge of the health-related benefits of physical activity and
of the risks associated with physical inactivity;
6. demonstrate knowledge of the principles specific to attaining and maintaining
good health and fitness throughout life; and
7. participate in physical activities that are self-paced at target heart rates
of moderate to vigorous intensity.

ENROLLING IN PEAC 1001
The Physical Activity and Health (P) requirement will normally be fulfilled
through the PEAC 1001 course. PEAC 1001 includes a lecture component and a
physical activity component. When registering for PEAC 1001, you must enroll in
a lecture section AND a physical activity section (e.g., PEAC 1001-01, Mondays
2:10-3:00 PM, and PEAC 1001-16, Mondays 1:10-2:00 PM). Students who DO NOT
enroll in both a lecture section and a physical activity section will be
administratively dropped from PEAC 1001 at the end of the first week of classes.
PLACE-OUT EXAM IN PEAC 1001
Students who are registered in PEAC 1001 will have the opportunity to PLACE-OUT
of the lecture component of the course. A 50-point multiple choice PLACE-OUT
exam will be administered during the second class of each PEAC 1001 lecture
section. If you select to write the PLACE-OUT exam, the course instructor will
crosscheck your photo ID (including W number) with the PEAC 1001 class roster
prior to entering the classroom. Only students who are listed on the PEAC 1001
class roster for that section will be permitted to complete the exam. The course
instructor will provide further directions during your first PEAC 1001 lecture
class.
If you score 70 percent or higher on the PLACE-OUT exam, you may choose to be exempt from the lecture component of PEAC 1001 for the remainder of the semester. You will, however, be required to continue to attend the physical activity section of PEAC 1001 in which you are enrolled for the remainder of the semester.
Students who score 90 percent or higher on the PLACE-OUT exam will receive a grade of A for the lecture component of PEAC 1001. Students who score between 80-89 percent on the PLACE-OUT exam will receive a grade of B for the lecture component of PEAC 1001.
Students who score between 70-79 percent on the PLACE-OUT exam will receive a
grade of C for the lecture component of PEAC 1001. If you score less than 70
percent on the PLACE-OUT exam, you will be required to continue to attend the
lecture section of PEAC 1001 and complete all course requirements to determine
your lecture grade. Your final grade in PEAC 1001 is based on two scores, one
score for the lecture component of the course (equivalent to two-thirds of the
final grade) and one score for the physical activity component of the course
(equivalent to one-third of the final grade).
EXCEPTIONS TO FULFILLING THE TWO COMPONENTS OF PEAC 1001
a. Transfer Student with University/College Credit
If you have completed either the lecture or physical activity component of P at
another college or university, you DO NOT have to complete that component of
PEAC 1001 at the University of Wyoming. The completion of either the lecture or
physical activity component at another college or university must be reflected
on your University of Wyoming transcript in the form of a transfer course. If
this applies to you, DO NOT enroll in PEAC 1001, lecture section or physical
activity section, yourself. Rather, visit our office associate in Corbett
Building 119 between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM to verify the completion of one or the
other component. Once verified, our office associate will enroll you in the
appropriate lecture or physical activity course section.
b. Other Substitutions for the Physical Activity Component of PEAC 1001
If you are on a University of Wyoming Varsity Athletic Team, a
University of Wyoming Club Sport Team, or the University of Wyoming
Marching Band (Fall Semester only) that meets all three of the requirements
listed below, or enrolled in PEAC 1272, ROTC Cardiovascular Conditioning,
PEAC 1275, ROTC Circuit Training, THEA 3410, Ballet III/I, THEA 3430, Modern
III/I, THEA 3480, Jazz III/I, THEA 4010, Advanced Ballet, or THEA 4030, Advanced
Modern, you may substitute this experience for the physical activity
component of PEAC 1001. The three requirements that must be met by all
substituted physical activity experiences are:
i. It must be a University of Wyoming affiliated varsity sport/club, sport/marching band, or on-campus course;
ii. The student must be participating/enrolled on the varsity sport/club sport team/marching band or course while enrolled in the lecture portion of PEAC 1001; and
iii. The varsity sport/club sport/marching band or course must meet multiple components of health-related fitness (cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility).
Students who choose to substitute a physical activity (as outlined above) for PEAC 1001 will be required only to complete the lecture component of PEAC 1001. Their grade in PEAC 1001 will be based completely on the lecture component of the course.
If you choose to substitute one of the listed experiences in b above, DO NOT
enroll in PEAC 1001, lecture section or physical activity section, yourself.
Rather, visit our office associate in Corbett Building 119 between 8:00 AM and
5:00 PM to verify the physical activity component of the class. Once verified,
our office associate will enroll you in the appropriate lecture or physical
activity course section.
WANT TO ENROLL IN AN ADDITIONAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SECTION?
After completing PEAC 1001 you can still enroll in additional physical
activities during your undergraduate career. For example, you may choose to
enroll in the Climbing Wall physical activity because you want to learn how to
rock climb, or you might want to enroll in the Lap Swim physical activity
because you want to maintain your fitness routine. If this applies to you, DO
NOT enroll in a PEAC 1001 physical activity section yourself. Rather, visit our
office associate in Corbett Building 119 between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM to verify
the completion of PEAC 1001. Once verified, our office associate will enroll you
in the physical activity of your liking, based on availability, for one-half
credit hour.
