 History of the Institute

The Institute has had an informal existence since 1966 when Dr. George C. Frison became the department head, was appointed Wyoming's first State Archaeologist, and began an active research and teaching career. Since that time, the Institute attracted internationally recognized scholars as well as graduate students from other universities, who joined the department from time to time as researchers, lecturers, or visiting speakers. These Visiting Scholars have been the core of the Institute in the past. Over 40 scholars have visited the Institute and used the Institute's facilities over the past 30 years. The Institute, although an informal entity at that time, was of tremendous benefit to the department, enabling Wyoming students and public to gain a broader appreciation of anthropology and archaeology. The University and UW trustees recognized these accomplishments by accepting the proposal to formally create the Frison Institute as a part of the University structure.
