June 7, 2006 -- A volunteer group that promotes the University of Wyoming College of Arts and Sciences has named three new members to its board.

The newest members of the Arts and Sciences Board of Visitors are Wyoming Supreme Court Chief Justice William U. Hill; John McNeill, a partner at Landrum & Shouse law firm in Lexington, Ky.; and Steve Peck, co-owner/publisher and editor of the Riverton Ranger newspaper.

Oliver Walter, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, says the college is honored by their interest in supporting the college and ensuring that UW students receive a great education.

"Each new member brings a unique set of skills and interests that will strengthen the board and the college," he says.

Hill was born in Montgomery, Ala., and raised in Riverton. He earned a B.A. in English (1970) and J.D. (1974) from UW. He has served as assistant United States attorney, assistant attorney general for Wyoming and chief of staff/chief counsel for Sen. Malcolm Wallop. Hill was appointed to the Wyoming Supreme Court on Nov. 3, 1998, and appointed chief justice on July 1, 2002. He was named a College of Arts and Sciences outstanding alumnus in 2005.

McNeill, the first African American hired by a Lexington law firm, is one of 14 partners at Landrum & Shouse. In 1979 he earned a B.S. in political science from UW and completed his J.D. at the University of Kentucky. Motivated by a passion for helping minority youths get the education or training necessary for success, McNeill has consulted with UW Vice President for Student Affairs Sara Axelson about recruitment and retention of minority students.

Peck was a journalism student at UW in the mid 80s and editor of the UW student newspaper The Branding Iron. He served as an adviser to the UW Department of Communication and Journalism and now co-owns the Riverton Ranger. Peck's wife, Shawn, earned her education degree from UW in 1987. His father is Robert Peck, who represents Wyoming Senate District 26.

The Arts and Sciences Board of Visitors comprises friends and alumni who assist the college with fundraising, constituent relations and student recruitment. The board sponsors alumni, faculty and student awards, along with events such as Meet the Dean sessions and the annual homecoming Morning of Courses.

Recently the group voted to continue a fundraising program that matches first-time College of Arts and Sciences gifts of $50-$1,000. For alumni and friends who made their first gift to the college after July 1, 2003, the board voted to match additional gifts that exceed the previous one, up to $2,000.
