Roman Republic Featured in June Lecture Series at UW |

June 2, 2006 -- A University of Wyoming professor's free public talk, "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Republic," is the first presentation in a June lecture series supported by the Wyoming Council for the Humanities (WCH).
Phil Holt, department head and professor of modern and classical languages, will speak Sunday, June 11. All series lectures are at 7:30 p.m. in Room 142 of the UW College of Law building.
The seventh annual Summer Classics Institute will explore, "Life, Love and War: Rome from Republic to Empire," June 11-16 at UW. Free public lectures will be offered each evening during the institute. The Summer Classics Institute also offers seminars and mini-courses exploring life and politics in ancient Rome.
The public lecture series continues Monday, June 12, as University of Arizona classics professor Marilyn Skinner presents "Catullus, Myth and Roman Expansion." Catullus' love poetry is said to have influenced the development of Western literature.
Tuesday, June 13, the series turns to war and soldiers' roles in society as Holt discusses "Soldiering and Citizenship; Greece, Rome and America."
Laura De Lozier, UW classical languages professor, explores power relationships in the early Roman Empire through the imagery on Roman coins in her Wednesday, June 14 talk.
UW Associate Professor of English Peter Parolin concludes the series Thursday, June 15, with his talk, "Infinite Variety: Pleasure and Politics in Antony and Cleopatra." Parolin, a Shakespeare expert, will explore Roman life through the eyes of the English playwright.
