April 26, 2006 -- Four University of Wyoming faculty members and one student will receive awards for their contributions to the UW Honors Program at an awards dinner, Friday, April 28.

Steve Bialostok, professor in the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education, will receive the Excellence in Teaching Upper-Level Honors Courses Award.

Bialostok "has a deep connection with the students and cares about their opinions and beliefs," says one student who nominated him for the award.

Janice Harris, professor in the Department of English, will also be honored for Excellence in Teaching Upper-Level Honors Courses. According to one of her students, "Her enthusiasm is contagious, and it is difficult not to become engaged in any topic she presents."

Freshman Honors students nominated Peter Parolin, professor in the Department of English, for the Excellence in Teaching Freshmen Honors Courses Award, because, according to one, "He brings his classes to life and makes the readings both understandable and enjoyable."

Steve Herbert, associate professor in the Department of Botany, will be awarded for Excellence in Teaching Non-Honors Courses. According to one nominator, "No matter how much or how little you know, Professor Herbert meets you where you are and guides you to higher academic understanding."

Jon Ngai, a computer engineering junior from Rock Springs, will receive the Service to Honors Award for his work as the organization's president.

"A great honors program means great students and great teachers," says Duncan Harris, director of the University Honors Program. "We are blessed with both."
