Aug. 18, 2003 -- An English literature class devoted to the unique category of horror is being offered for the fall semester through the University of Wyoming/Casper College (UW/CC) Center.

Bruce Richardson, English instructor, will teach "Studies in the Literature of Horror" (ENGL 4600). For more information or to register for the class, which begins Tuesday, Aug. 26, call the UW/CC Center at (307) 268-2713 or toll free at 1-877-264-9930.

"What scares us? Terror and horror have generated lots of bestsellers from the 18th century to the present," says Richardson.

The class will include classics in English horror literature such as "Frankenstein," "Dracula," and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and lesser known works by Horace Walpole, "Monk" Lewis and Ann Radcliffe. Richardson will conclude with books by Stephen King on the Ebola virus and the culture of fear in our time.

"This discussion-based class looks at terror in the post 9/11 era and how horror literature has exploited and addressed the anxieties of different times," Richardson says.

Known as an enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructor, Richardson has won an Ellbogen award for classroom teaching and been named one of the "Top 10" teachers in the UW College of Arts and Sciences.
