Oct. 10, 2008 -- Jeff Lockwood, professor in the UW departments of Philosophy and English, will read from and sign copies of his new book, "Six Legged Soldiers: Using Insects as Weapons of War," at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Second Story bookstore, First and Ivinson streets.

This event, hosted by the departments of Ecology and Philosophy and the M.F.A. program in Creative Writing, is free and open to the public.

Published by Oxford University Press, "Six-Legged Warriors" is the first comprehensive look at the use of insects as weapons of war, from ancient times to the present day. Beginning in prehistoric times and building toward a near and disturbing future, the reader is taken on a journey of innovation and depravity.

Lockwood, an award-winning science writer, reveals how easy it would be to use insects in warfare and terrorism today. These creatures are locally available, simple to produce, easy to disseminate, capable of staggering rates of reproduction and capable of wreaking economic, environmental and social havoc.

Lockwood's work has been included in the popular anthology "Best American Science and Nature Writing," and he is winner of both a Pushcart Prize and the John Burroughs Award. He is the author of "Grasshopper Dreaming: Reflections on Killing and Loving," "A Guest of the World" and "Locust: The Devastating Rise and Mysterious Disappearance of the Insect that Shaped the American Frontier."
