Visiting Poet to Teach UW Writing Course

Jan. 6, 1998 -- Sharon Doubiago, author of three award-winning book-length poems and two collections of short stories, will teach two three-credit courses at the University of Wyoming.

Doubiago is joining the UW Department of English Visiting Writer Series for the spring semester. Her course in "Exploring Poetry" is from 7-10 p.m. Mondays, starting Jan. 12, in Room 402 of Hoyt Hall. A more advanced-writer workshop on "Voice of the Soul" is from 7-10 p.m. Thursdays, starting Jan. 15, in Room 302 of Hoyt Hall.

"Even the most prolific writers may be blocked from doing their truest writing," Doubiago says. "Both classes use exercises to help writers break psychological barriers and to discover their unique voices and subject matter."

Doubiago is a non-traditional author who describes herself as a "natural experimentalist" because she teaches, reads and writes in so many styles. Her published works include lyric poetry, fiction, reviews, critical essays and short stories. Doubiago also is a rarity on the American literary scene -- an epic poet. Her first epic, "Hard Country," was published in 1982 and her most recent post-modern epic is "The Husband Arcane. The Arcane of O."

Born in Southern California, Doubiago was named Distinguished Visiting Poet at the University of Denver in 1989 and has also taught at the Naropa Institute in Boulder and the Split Rock Arts Program at the University of Minnesota.

Doubiago also will give a public reading of her works Saturday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Albany County Library. In April she will teach a one-credit, two-weekend course at the UW/Casper College Center.
