Ugandan Journalist to Speak at UW |

March 15, 2002 -- Caroline Lamwaka, a freelance journalist with the New Vision newspaper in Uganda and human rights fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, will speak Wednesday, March 20, at 7 p.m. in the Stock Growers' Room at the UW American Heritage Center.
Lamwaka's presentation, "The Situation of Women in Uganda Today," addresses the status of Ugandan women in politics and education and will describe the lives of women in war situations in the northern Ugandan. Lamwaka is visiting the University of Wyoming as part of Women's History Month.
Lamwaka has lived most of her life in Uganda, and since 1987 she has covered the civil war and peace process in northern Uganda. While working there Lamwaka covered peace talks between one of the rebel groups, the Uganda People's Democratic Army/Movement, and the government soldiers, the National Resistance Army. Lamwaka also exposed human rights violations by all parties in the armed conflict.
The UW Women's Studies and International Studies Programs, departments of English and Political Science, the Center for Ethics, and the President's Advisory Council on Minority and Women's Affairs sponsor the visit.
