Sept. 25, 2006 -- Boston University Professor James A. Winn will discuss his current book, "War and Poetry," Thursday, Sept. 28, at 4 p.m. in the University of Wyoming College of Business auditorium.

Winn's talk, "Poetry, War, and the Cause of Liberty," is the UW Department of English's annual L. L. Smith Lecture.

A distinguished scholar specializing in restoration and 18th century English literature, Winn holds a B.A. from Princeton and a Ph.D. from Yale. He joined the BU faculty as chairman of the English Department after teaching at the University of Michigan and Yale.

He is the author of "John Dryden and His World," a work considered the authoritative biography of the famous author, along with another work considered a top Dryden book. When the academic world honored Dryden on the tercentennial anniversary of his death, Winn was invited to give papers both in Bristol, England, and at the University of California - Los Angeles.

Winn, who is also a musicologist and accomplished musician, most recently wrote "The Pale of Worlds: Reflections on the Humanities and Performance," which examines the antipathy between literary studies and the performing arts.

The L.L. Smith Lecture Series was formed in 1964. Each L.L. Smith scholar is required to hold a public lecture to "stimulate intellectual activity" of UW faculty and students, and to serve as a scholar in residence to meet with graduate students and to lecture in various classes.
