History

The first international symposium on martens, sables and fishers was held in Laramie, Wyoming, USA in 1991, with 225 registrants. Since then, three more international symposia have been held, each providing an opportunity for information exchange about the biology and management of carnivorous mammals of this important group. Attendees have come from over a dozen countries, including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Russia, Belarus, Spain, China, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Hungary, Portugal, and Poland. The international Martes symposia are organized under the auspices of the Martes Working Group, an organization of scientists and conservationists devoted to the study and management of this group.

1995. Second International Martes Symposium, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

2000. Third International Martes Symposium, Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, Canada

2004. Fourth International Martes Symposium, Lisbon, Portugal.

Each of the meetings has resulted in a peer-reviewed edited volume that is an important resource for those interested in carnivore ecology and conservation:
