The oldest preserved locomotive in the world--built by William Hedley at Wylam-on-Tyneside, c. 1814.. This was not the first locomotive built. William Murdoch built locomotives in Cornwall in the 1780s, but none survive. The "Wylam Dilly" is on display in the Scottish National Museum, Edinburgh.  (Phil Roberts photograph)
