Undergraduate Studies

Women’s Studies at the University of Wyoming offers students an interdisciplinary exploration of the issues of sex, gender and sexuality.  The required classes offer students breadth of study, while our electives allow students to explore an area of interest.

Women's Studies Majors - The University of Wyoming offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Women’s Studies through the College of Arts and Sciences. Majors complete 33 hours of course work in Women’s Studies.  Many of the Women’s Studies required classes and electives fulfill the University Studies (USP) requirements.

The Women’s Studies major consists of five required classes and 18 hours of electives. The required classes include:

Introduction to Women’s Studies WMST 1080 (CH,D)
Gender and Society WMST 3500 (CS, WB)
Gender and Humanities WMST 3710 (CH)
Feminist Theories and Methodologies WMST 4700 (WC)
And either a Senior Paper, WMST 4965, or an Internship, WMST 4970

Each student receives strong support from the WMST faculty during her/his senior year while completing the senior paper and/or internship.

Electives in Women’s Studies vary each semester. Students are strongly urged to complete at least one elective that examines issues related to global women, and another related to the diversity of women’s experiences in the United States.

Women’s Studies has begun the process of assessment of our curriculum. See our academic plan for our goals and objectives of the major.

Women's Studies Minors - Minors in Women’s Studies complete 18 hours of course work designed to complement an existing major. The course work includes Introduction to Women’s Studies (WMST 1080), Gender and Society (WMST 3500), Gender and Humanities (WMST 3710), Feminist Theories and Methodologies (WMST 4700), and six hours of electives.

Women’s Studies Minor through the Outreach School - Beginning in Fall, 2006, students enrolled at UW through the Outreach School may complete a minor in Women’s Studies through Outreach Studies.  Required classes and electives will be offered on a rotating basis so that students can complete the degree within a four year period via off-campus delivery methods.  See the Outreach School bulletin for course offerings.

See the UW General Bulletin for descriptions of all WMST courses.
