Math and Science: Keys to Success

According to the National Science Foundation, among developed nations, the U.S. performed below the average in both math and science literacy. In 2003, U.S. 15-year-olds were outperformed by students in 20 other developed countries in mathematics, and outperformed by 15 other developed countries in science.

In the U.S. specifically, math and science performances also differed according to family income. At each grade Gr level, students from low-income families had substantially lower test scores in both math and science. Low-income students were three times less likely to score at or above the proficient level for their grade level in math and science.

Innovation is key to our future success as a nation. And math and science are keys to that innovation. In order to stay competitive in the global marketplace of ideas and technology, the U.S. needs to do more to answer the problem of our plummeting math and science scores.

And Upward Bound/MSIP is doing just that!
