I work primarily in the Rocky Mountains and Northern Plains. I have done fieldwork in Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arizona, Wisconsin, Denmark, and Israel. In the Old World, this work stretches from the early Middle Paleolithic to the early Neolithic. In the New World, my focus has been Paleoindian archaeology and New World colonization, geoarchaeology, lithic technology, and archaeometry. My primary focus has been the application of formal mathematical models and computer simulations to archaeological problems in a behavioral ecological framework. I have used this approach to address various aspects of hunter-gatherer lifeways, including mobility, demography, dispersal and colonization, predator-prey dynamics, and technological strategies. I have also dabbled a bit in the geochemistry of bone hydroxyapatite, in part as an effort to improve the reliability of radiocarbon dating of bone.
