PHIL'S COURSES, FALL, 2008

Phil's fall office hours: Tuesday, 11-Noon; Wednesday, 10-Noon, and by appointment
August 23, 2008: Phil returned from a two-week trip to the United Arab Emirates. While there, he conducted additional research on a book manuscript on a comparative history of oil development. He will return there later in the semester.
August 6, 2008: The Department of History hosted a visit by Dr. Nina Vashkau, professor of history, Volgograd State University, Russia. She presented a round-table on her research involving Germans from Russia in America.
July 31, 2008: Phil was a speaker for the orientation session for Leadership Wyoming, Class of 2009. The session was held at the Student Union Building on campus. Phil has been a speaker for the group since the program's inception.
July 21-23 and July 28-30, 2008: Phil accompanied two groups of teachers to South Pass City and sites associated with women's suffrage and with overland trail travel. The excursions were part of the Teaching American History summer program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
July 10, 2008: Phil spoke, in the park next to the Laramie train depot, with students participating in the summer honors program at the Allen L. Cook Spring Creek Preserve, operated by the University of Pittsburgh, near Rock River. He talked about the history of land ownership patterns and how it influenced Western development.
July 9, 2008: Phil presented the inaugural lecture for the newly re-instituted Fort Caspar summer lecture series. He spoke on the significance of the railroads to the creation and development of Wyoming and various towns in the state.
July 1, 2008: Phil visited with diplomats from India who were traveling in the West as guests of the Asia Foundation.
June 25, 2008: Phil spoke to a class at LCCC. His topic was the Wyoming Constitution.
June 8-14, 2008: Phil was the history guide on a tour of Wyoming history sites. Stops included Fort Laramie, Devils Tower, Gillette coal mines, Johnson County War sites, Sheridan, Casper, and Cody area sites, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, the Wind River reservation, Lander, and Rawlins. The 34 participants included numerous UW alumni. The trip was organized and coordinated by Heather Landers, John Scozzafava, and Barbara Barnes from the Center for Conferences & Continuing Education, Outreach School.
