June 11, 2009: Phil returned to Wyoming from conducting research on several projects. He traveled to the United Arab Emirates and to Greece during the nearly month-long excursion.
May 12, 2009: The UP steam locomotive came through Laramie, returning to its home base in Cheyenne after almost a month on the West Coast. Phil team-teaches a course on Wyoming railroad history occasionally in association with Rob Godby of the UW Economics Department. The class always tours the shops where volunteers maintain the famed steam locomotive.
May 6, 2009: Phil led a Laramie History walking tour of Greenhill Cemetery that had been postponed May 1 due to inclement weather. Some 25-30 people attended the hour-and-a-half walk, stopping at burial places of many Laramie pioneers including M. C. Brown, Laramie's first mayor; Dr. Grace Raymond Hebard, prominent UW historian; and Thurman Arnold, Laramie native who became a famous New Deal lawyer. The event was sponsored by the UW chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the history honorary.
April 22, 2009: The Department of History held its annual awards banquet at the Historic Laramie Railroad Depot. See photos of the event.
April 19, 2009: Phil spoke to the Laramie County Historical Society in Cheyenne. His topic was Wyoming's reaction to the "Great Depression" of the 1920s and 1930s.
April 7, 2009: Phil spoke to Scott Randolph's railroad history class on the history of the Union Pacific as it relates to the development of Wyoming.
April 7, 2009: Phil visited with a group of engineering students about UW's historic buildings and how, over the years, historic preservation has been utilized in retaining historic structures and, at the same time, making them usable in UW's academic mission.
April 3-4, 2009: The regional conference of Phi Alpha Theta, the history honorary, was held in Laramie. Phil served as a session moderator and commentator.
March 28, 2009: Phil was interviewed by a reporter from the Rawlins Daily Times on the value of oral history and how it may be used in understanding broader historical questions.
March 2009: Phil, accompanied by two UW graduate students in public history, traveled to the United Arab Emirates over spring break to initiate a cooperative program in public history/museum studies with a university in that Middle East country.
Jan. 29, 2009: Phil was interviewed for a story about the impact Abraham Lincoln, his administration and legacy have had on Wyoming. The interviewer was from the Gillette News-Record.
Jan 27, 2009: Phil spoke to Dr. Pete Simpson's class on Wyoming's political identity.
Jan. 15, 2009: Phil was interviewed for a news article on the history of drinking in Wyoming and how attitudes toward alcohol might have been shaped by past historical events. The interview was conducted by a reporter for the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle.
Jan. 10, 2009: Phil returned to Laramie after spending three weeks researching in the United Arab Emirates and visiting area historical sites.
Dec. 23, 2008: Phil presented a guest lecture on the media and contemporary American politics to a mass media class at American University in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
