Terminology for Islam

Islam is the name of this religion, both for believers and for scholars. For example, "Mohammed founded Islam." Terms like "Mohammedism" and Muslimism are absolutely incorrect.

The name for the people who adhere to Islam is Moslem, which is sometimes spelled Muslim. For example, "Most Arabs are Moslems."

Moslem and Muslim can also function as adjectives. For example, "The Muslim belief in Allah is central to Islam."

Islamic is also a valid adjective. For example, "The Islamic practice of prayer is quite rigorous."

The prophet who founded Islam is Mohammed. In English, his name can be spelled Mohammed or Muhammad.

The Muslim holy book is called the Koran. Koran can also be spelled Quran. For example, "The Quran was dictated to Muhammad by the angel Gabriel."
