Club News:

Mtb season Wraps up with a 12th place overall in Division I at MTB Nationals and 2nd Overall in Conference for 2003

The UW cycling Mountain Bike team finished a very successful season in the first two weekends of October.  Over the weekend of October 4-5th,  the UW Cycling Team traveled south to Durango, CO for Conference Finals. We came into the race in 3rd place overall in the conference, behind Ft. Lewis College and University of Colorado with Mesa State College and Colorado State University barely behind us in points standings. We competed in all 4 events over the weekend (downhill, short-track, dual, and cross-country) and after the racing was over and the dust cleared, the final points tally in conference standings showed a bit of an upset.  UW had just edged out CU to take 2nd in the conference for the second year in a row.  This was the result of strong showings in not only the premier A-categories, but due to the very hard work riders in the B and C development categories put in where they stole several top-10 finishes.  Mesa State finished in fourth place and CSU rounded out the top five teams in conference.   Here's UW's top ten Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling Conference overall results for 2003...  For the cross-country and short-track events...  Men B: Evan O'Toole-7th. Men C: Chris Carroll-1st, Matt Hudson-3rd, Bret Waldron-4th, Kris Elmstedt-5th, Jacob Arivizu-7th, Sam Mather-10th. Women A: Kimberly Garvie-7th. Women B: Kaye Lemons-2nd, Sarah Summers-3rd, Winter Hansen-5th, Annie Peters-6th, Heidi Svenkeson-8th.  For the downhill, dual, and mountain-cross events...  Men A: Mark Milliken-6th, Carl Gose-7th, Brian Pier-9th. Men B: Aaron Feagan-1st. Men C: Sam Mather-2nd, Aaron Feagan-3rd. Women A: Heidi Svenkeson-8th.

After that successful weekend the team was primed for Nationals October 8-12th in Angel Fire NM.  Unfortunately, Kimberly Garvie had to sit out Mtb Nats for the second year in a row after sustaining internal injuries in a crash just short of the finish at the end of the Durango XC event (these required a 2-night stay in lovely Durango Mercy Hospital, but more importantly before she got into the ambulance she made sure she finished her race, ending up in the top ten despite her pain- way to go girl!!).  Her absence left UW without an almost certain top-10 finishes in the Women's A XC events (cross-country and short-track), a real blow to our national team's chances at a top-10 finish.  The rest of the team pulled together well though and  after a hard weekend of racing we managed a 12th place overall in the Division I points standings.  The Rocky Mountain Conference dominated the Nationals events, with Fort Lewis taking first overall among Div. I teams, just edging out CU-Boulder and Mesa State who rounded out the top three team places.  CSU managed a 7th place overall, and UW put a fourth team from the Rocky Mountain conference in the Top 15.  The University of New Mexico also ended up in the top 15 placing 14th overall. Top-10 placings at Nats included Clayton Barrows in 8th in the Men's Div. I cross-country and Callie Hilty in 9th in the Women's Div. I downhill event.  In the Men's B open race, Evan O'Toole showed that UW's future looks bright as he took a 2nd place in the National cross-country B event and a 3rd overall in the B short-track.  Other results included Clayton Barrows, 28th and John Peterson 31st in in the Div I short-track, and John took 41st in the Div. I cross-country.  In the Div. I downhill event, Brian Pier took 31st, Mark Milliken 22nd and Carl Gose 20th.  Brian and Mark also broke the top-20 in the Dual Slalom, event, with Brian making it to the bracket of 16 before being eliminated.

Great job everyone for a tremendous season.  without everyone's efforts including those in Men's C and B, and Women's B we would not have caught CU in the conference.   With a squad of such talented young riders we ought to be able to very competitive for the next few years!
