AFRO-AMERICAN CONCERNS IN THE ELECTION   Monday, Noon.  342 Squires

     There are several overlapping stratification systems in the
USA.  Prof. Carr-Hamilton will talk about how the election will
affect racist stratification in the next administration.  Your
assignment, if you chose to take it, is to report how Prof. C-H
approaches the concepts below. 
These come from the chapter on Social Stratification. Read it first.
EMBOURGEOSIEMENT THESIS:   Liberals say that capitalism tends to
eliminate the extremes of class and racial inequality [the Embour-
geosiement thesis.  Marxists and other conflict theorists say that 
capitalism tends to increase inequality [the immiseration thesis].  
A: Which candidate is likely to reduce racist inequality by
bringing more Afro-Americans into the middle class with his
social policies?  
B: Which candidate is likely to 'immiserate' i.e., increase inequality
between Anglos and Afro-Americans with his social policies?
