AFRO-AMERICAN CONCERNS IN THE ELECTION Monday, Noon. 342 Squires
Prof. J. Carr-Hamilton, Religion Department
There are several overlapping stratification systems in the
USA. Prof. Carr-Hamilton will talk about how the election will
affect racist stratification in the next administration. Your
assignment, if you chose to take it, is to report how Prof. C-H
approaches any two of the first three concepts below. These come
from the chapter on Social Stratification. They ask, 'Which
candidates will increase or decrease racist inequality in the USA.'
10 points each.
Underline the concepts used. The paper is to be typed and
carefully edited. Do the best job you can possibly do. It is due
next Thursday, 8 Oct.
STRATIFICATION THEORY: Structural-Functionalists say that the
structure of class, race, and gender inequality is functionally
necessary; conservatives say that some 'races' are superior to others.
Some say that some cultures are superior to others. Liberals say
that some inequality is necessary and that it should be based on
individual merit rather than race or gender. Conflict theorists
say that inequality is unnecessary and argue for the end of racial,
gender and/or class privilege.
Identify the theoretical position of each of three three presidential
candidates on these two points: functional necessity and racial
origin. EARN UP to 11 points

Defend your answer with material from Dr. Carr-Hamilton's talk.
