We, the delegates to the North American and Cuban Philosophers and Social Scientists Tenth Annual Conference declare:
1)Our unwavering opposition to the illegal, immoral, and inhumane United States blockade of Cuba.
2)Our profound opposition to efforts by the United States government to limit the right both of U.S. citizens and Cuban citizens, including scholars and students, to travel to each others' countries in pursuit of free inquiry and to participate in intellectual and cultural exchanges.
3)Our condemnation of the efforts of the United States government to block our participation in this annual conference by initially denying our license to travel to Cuba.
At the same time, we declare:
1)Our deepest gratitude for the warmth and friendship shown by our Cuban colleagues in hosting this 1998 conference.
2)Our recognition of the beginnings of economic recovery in recent years.
3)Our strong support for the Cuban revolutionary commitment to the social and economic well being of its population which is an inspiration to peoples of North America and the world.
Therefore, we proclaim our solidarity with the Cuban people as they struggle to preserve their revolutionary project.
Finally, we resolve to return to our towns and cities energized and ready to tell our fellow citizens the truth about Cuba; to work for the repeal of the economic blockade and the punative laws that cause pain and suffering to the Cuban people; and to commit ourselves to the struggle for social, economic, and racial justice in our countries.
