EPSCoR Ecology Project

The EPSCoR Ecology Project is aimed at developing ecological research infrastructure at the University of Wyoming. This is being done by unifying the ecology faculty scattered across campus in diverse departments, by hiring new faculty members to strengthen ecology and link it with cognate disciplines, and by developing centralized analytical capacity relevant to ecological research. The project, part of Wyoming’s 2005-2009 NSF EPSCoR grant, is administered by Professor Stephen T. Jackson (Co-PI) in coordination with Professor Randy Lewis, state NSF EPSCoR Director.

The doctoral Program in Ecology was launched under project funding in Fall 2005. This program draws together ecologists from departments across campus to provide integrated training to doctoral students.

As of fall 2007 we have completed three of five tenure-track faculty searches. We have hired Dr. Kiona Ogle (ecological modeling and statistics), Dr. Cynthia Weinig (ecological genetics), and Dr. Naomi Ward (ecological genomics and microbial ecology). A search is currently underway for an ecological climatologist. A fifth position will be advertised in fall 2008.

The project is also funding the development and diversification of three core facilities on campus. The Nucleic Acids Exploration Facility (NAEF) was launched entirely under project funds. It is aimed at providing high-throughput, low-cost DNA sequencing and genotyping. The Stable Isotope Facility (SIF) has expanded its staff and analytical capacities under project funds. The Wyoming Geographic Information Sciences Center (WyGISC) has expanded its staff and capacities to cover ecological informatics under project support.
