Admission Procedure for the Program in Ecology

All students admitted to the Program in Ecology (PiE) must have a faculty sponsor and a home department. The faculty sponsor agrees to advise the student in their course of study, and the home department (typically the home department of the faculty sponsor) agrees to provide a physical home and in many cases provides a commitment for assistantship support. PiE students must be admitted into the graduate program of the prospective home department as well as the Program in Ecology. Review of applications is concurrent between PiE and the respective individual departments.

Procedure for application:

  1. Contact one or more PiE faculty members in your area of interest at least a few weeks in advance of submitting your formal application. Such contacts are typically made during the fall semester, though many successful contacts have been made in January and February.

  2. Once a prospective faculty sponsor has been identified, complete the University of Wyoming’s Graduate School Admission Application: http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/UWGrad/applynow.asp In the application, list the faculty sponsor’s home department as the academic department of interest. The application will be routed to that department upon completion.
  3. Contact the faculty sponsor again and alert them to your application and to your interest in the Program in Ecology. It will normally be the prospective faculty sponsor’s responsibility to route the application to the Program.
  4. Send an email to the Program in Ecology (ecology@uwyo.edu), that notifies us of (a) your application to the Graduate School, (b) the name of your prospective faculty sponsor, (c) the home department you identified in your application, and (d) your contact info (email and phone). This will alert us to your application and ensure review by the Program. You do not need to send a separate application to the PiE office.

Applications will be reviewed by the individual home departments, concurrent with review by the PiE Graduate Affairs Committee. Admission to PiE is contingent on admission to the respective home department. Applicants will be notified of their admission to PiE and to the individual home departments.
