Due Monday, Sept 29. If you submit this essay in hard copy, you
will need to turn it in at my box in the History dept. by 5 pm or office
closing time. If you submit this essay
by email attachment, I’ll consider any paper submitted after midnight to be
late.
4-5 pages, 1000 to
1250 words
This paper should be
written in the form of an essay, with an introduction that clearly articulates
your central arguments or points of discussion.
Your essay should also have a conclusion.
In this essay, examine
several sections of Darnton’s Great Cat
Massacre in comparison with the theoretical approaches outlined in Houses of History. What theories of history, and what methods of
analysis, does Darnton use to explore 18th century French culture
and society? You should not try to cover
every aspect of either book; instead, focus on two or three themes that will
demonstrate your understanding of several historical theories and Darnton’s use
of those theories.
Your essay should be
scrupulously footnoted.
