Mission Statement: This website has been created to inform teenagers about the issues and problems that are associated with the media's portrayal of a person's "ideal" body image.  We feel that the primary source of these problems is with magazines, and we hope to educate teens so that they can make healthy, educated choices about their bodies.

I will be focusing on how images in our culture, including those in magazines, have a negative effect on the way guys view their bodies.  This is an important issue because, until recently, this has been looked at as an issue that primarily effects girls.  By looking at different studies in the field and specific case studies, I hope to push the issue of guys and body image into a more public forum.

I am a sophomore at the University of Wyoming and am majoring in Dance. I have been interested in the topic about body image since I watched a fellow dancer go through anorexia and how her mother dealt with the situation. What I hope to get across is how much parents play a role in their child/children's life when it comes to weight problems and dieting. In order to do this, I plan on showing parents how they affect their children with the way that they talk about dieting and weight issues. I also plan on telling parents what signs to look for in eating disorders which include the use of internet pro-sites and where to look for help and how to ask for help with eating disorders in your family.

I will be focusing more on how magazine models are not real and the influences they have on young teens.  I will talk about how they have been digitally airbrushed therefore making them seem perfect.  I will discuss how studies have shown that magazines do effect young teens who don't already have body issues and how magazines set the standard for how women should look and that is why there is a need for them to be small.  I will try to be proving that by using women of all sizes and shapes it can change the way society views the "ideal body" and will place less pressures on children to be thin.

My contribution to this website is a position paper focusing on pro-ana and pro-mia websites. In my paper I show what is on many of these sites and how they influence young teen life choices. One area I focus on is the "thinspiration" photos. Many of these photos are of magazine models. By using these photos in their sites they encourage anorexia and  bulimia. I propose that magazines use more true life photos in their advertisements. Doing this will decrease the amount of stress teens feel to look a certain way.
