Short Hort Notes

• Update on New Bulletins: We have been working on three new horticulture bulletins, one of which was published last fall, “Salinity Problems in Turfgrass.” It is B-1167, by Kelli Belden and Karen Panter. The other two are in the pipeline but don’t have bulletin numbers yet. One is “Landscaping: Fertilizing Trees and Shrubs” and the other is “Landscaping: Flowering Annuals for Wyoming.” The latter two have been reviewed and should be published within the next couple of months.
   

• Horticulture Train-the-Trainer Session a Success: On November 14-15, 2005, 23 Extension Educators and veteran Master Gardeners attended our first Horticulture Train-the-Trainer session. Evaluations came back highly positive. We will be setting up one or two of these annually for the foreseeable future, hopefully in different locations around the state. Our next session will probably be sometime this summer, depending on trainer schedules and location availability.
   
• In the Panter Back Yard: There’s little action outside except for squirrels and various siskins, finches, and sparrows. Most of the action is in the house with several orchids in bloom (still) and some new arrivals. The white-flowered bougainvillea plant finally gave up the ghost, but not before we were able to take a bunch of cuttings from it. They rooted well and are now potted up and getting acclimated to their new home. Some other new arrivals include an angel-wing begonia and a Philodendron pertussum, both of which remind us of Audrey from “The Little Shop of Horrors.” They are threatening to take over the dining room and may have to be banished elsewhere! Maybe even the compost pile.
